美国独立250周年纪念专刊｜李恩富用“人人平等”这一美国基本原则抨击排华法

1852年，旧金山华人Norman Ah Sing投书《上加州报》， 他依据美国“人人平等”的立国之本驳斥州长彼格勒的排华言论。
1885年，芝加哥大学医院院毕业的Saum Song Bo在纽约的“太阳报”发表公开信，揭露并抨击排华法下美国华人遭受的种族压迫。

同样是本着“人人平等”这一美国基本原则，1887年耶鲁大学优秀毕业生李恩富这样抨击排华法，以下视频来自PBS纪录片“排华法”：
“No nation can afford to let go its high ideals. The founders of the American Republic asserted the principle that all men are created equal and made this fair land a refuge for the whole world. Its manifest destiny, therefore, is to be the teacher and leader of nations in liberty. Its supremacy should be maintained by good faith and righteous dealing, and not by the display of selfishness and greed.
But now, looking at the actions of this generation of Americans in their treatment of other races, who can get rid of the idea that the Nation, which Abraham Lincoln said was conceived in liberty, waxed great through oppression, and was really dedicated to the proposition that all men are created to prey on one another?
How far this Republic has departed from its high ideal and reversed its traditionary policy may be seen in the laws passed against the Chinese. “

李恩富是清朝小留学生，1887年毕业作为优秀生毕业于耶鲁大学，上台致辞时不讲自己的成就而是通篇揭露美国排华运动，然后他在《北美评论》上发表《华人必须留在美国》。以上是此文的开头段落。
李恩富在1884年向媒体表示，“弗雷德里克·道格拉斯（Frederick Douglas，黑人领袖）为他自己的族群做出伟大贡献，我也要为华人尽我的全力。”
李恩富孙子，重孙将近一个半世纪后，历史如此似曾相识！
华人学子们，让我们拿出李恩富的勇气，在美国独立纪念活动中，本着“人人平等“的美国原则，勇敢抗击当代社会对华人社区的偏见。
